Višta Puode

“Vista puode” means chicken in the pot.”  The owner of the restaurant serves food that he enjoyed during his childhood days. The restaurant is separated into three areas but connected by one kitchen. Svetainė (the living room) serves breakfast, Traktierius (the tavern) serves lunch and snacks, and Restoranas (the restaurant) is a space dedicated to special occasions and dinners.

I dined in the living room as the tavern was full during lunch. The place had an inviting, bright, and rustic interior with interesting decorations.

The table mat has the history of the restaurant’s name and some local food, so you can have a read while waiting for the food.

I had just arrived in Kaunas, and it was a chilly day. The soup was perfect; it tasted like grandmother’s homemade chicken soup. The chicken cutlet was tender and juicy, and the potato puree was very flavorful.

Other than the slow service, the food was delicious. This is a restaurant worth checking out if you are in the area.

Lemonade €2.90

Slow-cooked chicken broth €2.50

Chicken cutlet with soft cheese served with potato puree €6. 40

Doughnuts for all at Holy Donut

Holy Donut is one of the best places to get doughnuts in Lithuania. They have one in Vilnius and two in Kaunas.

Holy Donut also offers a breakfast menu and is known for its over-the-top milkshakes (freak shakes). In addition, vegan options, such as vegan donuts and bagels, are available.

I visited Holy Donut on two occasions—once for breakfast and once in the afternoon.

The chocolate donut was soft and airy, with a sticky, rich chocolate coating that added just the right amount of sweetness.

For breakfast, I ordered the pancakes with bacon. The bacon was slightly thicker than what I’m used to and wasn’t as crispy, but it was still flavorful. The pancakes were fluffy and soft, pairing beautifully with the bacon for a perfect balance of sweet and savory.

Vegan meal at Moksha

Moksha is a humble little vegan restaurant with an Indian and Thai fusion menu. Although it is known as a vegan restaurant, it does offer fish dishes. The restaurant is small, with just a few tables, and it can get quite busy, so it’s worthwhile to make a reservation. The restaurant has a cozy ambiance with deep house/ chill techno music playing in the background.

The server was personable and welcoming. However, the service was slow, as there was only one server.

I ordered the Thai Green Curry with Fish (€ 12) and Tom Yum (€ 7). The curry and soup were delicious and mildly spiced. The flavors were distinct, and the ingredients were fresh.

The Tom Yum soup was different from the ones I’ve had. It tasted more like an Indian curry soup with Thai elements. It was creamier, just a little tangy, and had a stronger coriander taste. The chopped onions added sharpness and crunch to the soup.

The fish in the Thai curry was tender, and there was a generous amount of vegetables, such as green peppers, broccoli, bamboo, and button mushrooms. The basmati rice was a nice accompaniment to the curry.

A good place in Kaunas for Vegan Thai/Indian food.
